Fire Fighter and Emergency First Responder Workshops

Fire Raft 1: $250

Equipment Required: Thermal immersion wear wetsuit/dry suit, PFD, Helmet, River shoes.

Participate Requirements: strong swimmer

Workshop Outline: This 1 day workshop is designed to get the first responders into the raft and feel how it handles and what the platform can do when operated to its potential. The raft will be controlled by an experienced class V guide to demonstrate what a raft can achieve with the right inputs from the crew and guide. The participants will be given instruction in how to properly inflate and deflate the boat, rigging for whitewater, paddling on command and general rafting requirements for a boat crew to preform search and rescue/recovery mission.

Schedule: 0800- 1600 (bring lunch and snacks)

Instructor to Participate Ratio: 1 to 4

Fire Raft 2: $500

Equipment Required: Thermal immersion wear wetsuit/dry suit, PFD, Helmet, River shoes.

Participate Requirements: Strong Swimmer, understanding of raft basics.

Workshop Outline: This 2-day workshop is designed to get the first responder operating the raft in easy class 2 water and moving the raft around the river with the aid of the paddler crew. Basic water reading and rapid running will be discussed and practiced throughout the first day and skills learnt will be tested on the second day. The second day the responders will be doing laps on a class 2 and 3 section of river, rescue scenarios will be included in each lap to give the operator first-hand experience with the raft as a rescue platform.

• Day 2 0830-1630 (bring lunch and snack)

Fire Raft 3: $750

Equipment Required: Thermal immersion wear wetsuit/dry suit, PFD, Helmet, River shoes.

Participate Requirements: Strong Swimmer, understanding of raft basics, working knowledge of raft dynamics, working knowledge of rope systems.

Workshop Outline: This 3-day workshop is designed to give the first responders the skills required to get in the raft and guide a team of paddlers down the river preforming search and rescue. Water reading and rapid running will be the main focuses, responders will be introduced into advanced methods of controlling the raft and troubleshooting problems that arise in the river environment.

• Day 1 0800- 1630 (bring lunch and snack)
• Day 2 0830-1630 (bring lunch and snack)
• Day 3 0830-1700 (bring lunch and snack)

Equipment Required: Thermal immersion wear wetsuit/dry suit, PFD, Helmet, River shoes.

Participate Requirements: Strong Swimmer, understanding of raft basics, working knowledge of raft dynamics, working knowledge of rope systems, Ability to guide a raft effectively in class 3

Workshop Outline: This 4-day workshop is designed to take all the river and raft skills learnt in previous workshops and to expand the responder’s knowledge and skill base. The first 3 days will involve advanced technique instruction and skill practice. The final day each responder will run a 6-mile down river search and rescue scenario. This workshop will include a night scenario and a high angle extraction. responders will also learn “Read and Run” criteria and practice.

• Day 3 0830-1700 (bring lunch and snack)
• Night 3 1900-2100
• Day 4 0930-1430 (bring lunch and snack)

Paddle and Oar Boating

These workshops are designed for Private and Commercial rafters to learn or improve their skills. Platypus Rescue workshops are tailored to individual goals and focus on making you a more confident/controlled river guide. 1 to 4 day workshops available please contact Platypus Rescue to discuss your personal needs/goals.

The second day the participants will be doing laps on a class 2 and 3 section of river practicing man over board/ flipped raft and getting stuck on rocks.

Paddle Raft 3: $750

Equipment Required: Thermal immersion wear wetsuit/dry suit, PFD, Helmet, River shoes, Throw Bag, Webbing 15ft, carabiner x3, Prussic Cordx2

Participate Requirements: Strong Swimmer, understanding of raft basics, working knowledge of raft dynamics, some understanding of ropes.

Workshop Outline: This 4-day workshop is designed to take all the river and raft skills learnt in previous workshops and to expand the participant’s knowledge and skill base. This workshop offers participant’s the chance to test their skills and advance their technique, learning proper body mechanics to impart more power and to keep the body safe from injury. Scouting/Hazard Recognition/Line Selection/Safety Positions/Portaging. Flat/ Vertical/ Partial Wraps along with Surfing are all covered in detail every day of the course with questions highly encouraged. Paddle boating is the most traditional way to navigate white water. The Paddle Boat workshops prioritize reading and reacting to river features, teaching the participant to anticipate and plan moves appropriate to the situation. Student to Instructor ratio for Paddle Boat workshops 4:1

Oar Boating

Oar Boating gives the single rower control over the boat and affords the rower much more power. Rowing is gear/set up orientated the participants will learn to set up, run and pack down the oar rig. The Oar Boat workshops prioritize boat positioning and oar management. Student to Instructor ratio for Oar Boat workshops 2:1
